The field of raw materials and bloody compost. A lone wisp of cold wind through chainmail before the ground opens up. Unspeakable Carnage’s vinyl premiere drives transformation through violence. Charlie Oakes, John Wallent and Andrew Scott dig themselves out of the Earth one blistering cut after another. Charlie erects the flaming lodge with pillars of hardened bone. The blasts are akin to mammoth hide stretched over the bronze wheel and struck with hammers. From this aggregate come Wallent’s lead guitar lines, the actual slash of devastating string work scorching the burial mound as Andrew’s caveman bass compositions shake from Beneath.
A critical fact of this release is these are two separate recordings. “A Scene Of…” (2023) is the peasant milling bone flour as the flaming hole in the Earth widens behind them. “Unbearable Weight” (2024), is the thing that crawls out. Speaking to the opposing tracklists, the point is pure storytelling: Side A is as it claims: Bronze Age Violence. “I see the winged wheel,” spews Wallent from Slain. Additional rage oozes from sister tracks like Seventh Seal, a standout cut of what makes Unspeakable Carnage uniquely hellish. “Hark! On high I count the seals” pierces like the immolating wind. Side B is the corresponding tale of consequence: “feel my blade pierce the heart of honor,” lilts while pummeling strikes are cut up by shrieks of menace. Across both releases is the unrelenting dread both before and after the field of battle takes your name from you.
Ultimately these ashes are yours to sift through. Tear into these tracks as they tear into you and maybe the last spitting and feral question will be answered: Whose blood is this that flows from beneath the stone?
